It is a very natural state of relaxation that is similar to the altered state of consciousness that we seek through meditative techniques. We can therefore use a flickering flame to induce that state of consciousness for our own meditative purposes.
Trataka, or candle gazing, is a method of meditation that is actually a part of hatha yoga. Because your eyes are open during a trataka meditation, you have something physical to focus on. If you struggle with maintaining awareness and presence during meditation, this technique could quickly send you to a state of meditation in which you can access higher states of intuition and energetic sensitivities.

Whether you are in a chair or cross-legged on the floor, make sure your back is straight. You need to place your candle so that the flame is about two feet away from you, at eye level. Take a few deep, deep breaths. Deep, even breaths send oxygen to your brain, triggering a physiological response that helps you relax and get out of your head. Then breathe evenly and naturally as you fix your gaze on the candle flame.
Hold a steady gaze. Allow your conscious mind to step back and let go of all thoughts, just for now. Let go and accept, just for now, that you are nothing but your awareness at this moment. You don’t have anything to do. You don’t have to be anybody. You don’t have to live up to any label. You can just be. Eventually you can allow everything to fall away except for your awareness and the candle flame.
Now if you like, once you are established in this meditative state of I AM, you may wish to incorporate something similar to a mantra. This is where you may choose to work with crystal candles infused with aromatherapy and energetic intentions.
The Difference Between Candle Gazing and Mala Beads
When you meditate with mala beads, you are repeating words of a mantra in your mind. The purpose of the mantra is to give your conscious mind something to focus on while your subconscious does its work.
With candle gazing, your conscious mind is already focused on the flame. So there are no words. There are feelings. Instead of repeating a mantra, you focus your subconscious awareness on what it is like to experience the energies of a particular intention. You slip even deeper into your right brain consciousness, into the world of feelings, symbols and intuition. As you hold your conscious awareness steady with the candle flame, your right brain consciousness allows you to experience it right then and there. If you access any language at all, let it be to describe what you’re feeling.

Let’s practice with the I AM POWERFUL Crystal Candle that is available in our shop. Once you’ve induced a meditative state by maintaining a steady gaze at the flame, focus a portion of your awareness on what I AM POWERFUL feels like. If you struggle with this, then pretend or rehearse what it would be like to feel powerful. Now starting from that place, know that whatever comes up is fine, including symbols and metaphors.
I AM powerful. It feels like _____. I AM powerful. I feel _____. Over and over. What does it feel like to you? Does it feel like a rush of energy? Does it feel like confidence? Do you feel taller? Explore those feelings as you gaze into the flame. Sit with them. Sit with them until you feel you have exhausted every way you could possibly feel about it, and then push further in, past the discomfort, until you feel a mental or energetic shift. And then keep going.
Why push so far? Once you reach this point, you are creating new neural pathways in your brain. As you press further in, those new pathways grow into new neural networks. With new neural networks, your belief system and energetic frequency changes.
And when you pair a scent with meditation, you can use that scent to anchor your consciousness back to the state you experienced when you meditated! Before you finish your meditation, set an intention, or rather an agreement with yourself. Say to yourself, “Whenever I smell this candle, I will immediately feel the energy of I AM powerful (or whatever mantra you are using)” Now you have programmed your brain to return to that energetic frequency whenever you smell the candle.

Palo Santo, incense, and sage are all powerful tools to burn in your space.
But what’s the difference between them? When should you use one over the other…and how do you use them?
Sage and palo santo are typically used to cleanse a space of negative energy, whereas incense is typically a blend of oils or herbs in a stick or cone used to alter your mood and energetic state.
Incense can assist you in meditation, lucid dreaming, and help you connect to a specific type of energy. Certain scents, like sandalwood and Nag Champa, can be used for cleansing, but sage and Palo Santo, in their more pure states, tend to be more powerful.
Sage and Palo Santo are used for “smudging,” a practice that clears away all the energetic junk you may have gathered throughout your life to return you to a peaceful, harmonious state. According to shamanic practitioner Marika Messager, smudging is the psychic equivalent of washing your hands before eating.
Even modern scientific research is getting behind smudging, as studies have found that burning sage releases negative ions, which is linked to a more positive mood.
When smudging, here’s what you need to know about the differences between sage and palo santo:
They have different roots. Palo Santo is known as a “holy wood” from Peru, with its earliest use dating back to Incan civilization. Most sage comes from the southwest US and Northern Mexico, and its roots go back to both the Native Americans and Celtic Druids.
Both of these tools are endangered due to over-harvesting, so it’s important to buy either kind from companies that sustainably harvest them.
They have different scents and burns. Sage is herby. It has a much stronger scent than Palo Santo and while I love it, it’s definitely not for everyone. Palo Santo has a much sweeter, fresher, and more subtle smell than sage.
But sage is much easier to keep lit, so it’s best for clearing large spaces. Palo Santo won’t burn as long and if you want to cleanse a large space like your whole home, you’ll need to re-light it several times.
Energetic properties. Both of these magical plants have amazing benefits. Sage clears all energy, both good and bad, from a space when you use it for cleansing. Palo Santo clears only the negative energy and brings in positive energy.
But don’t worry, you can still use sage! Just make sure to bring some positive energy into your space afterward with some meditation, crystals, or reiki.
After you cleanse, light whatever incense you like to bring a specific type of energy into your newly cleared space.

]]>Mala beads are a tactile reminder during meditation and chanting. In many traditions, prayer and chanting is done in certain numbers. By running the beads through your fingers as you chant you are able to keep track of how many times you have repeated the mantra or prayer. Now a days people use them to help calm their monkey minds that many people combat in meditation. Having the beads keep the mind and hands busy to help focus. They can also help with a person's breathing. Instead of chanting or using a mantra, the beads can help you to clear the mind and track the breath with an inhale for 1 bead and an exhale for 1 bead.
The most common mala bead configuration is the 108 bead mala. There are 108 mantra beads and often a head bead called the guru bead. This guru bead can be a tassel, a gem or anything that resonates with the person or it can be picked due to its intention (Example – Rose Quartz is love – the mantra can be about rose quartz).
The guru bead is important as it represent your own guru or teacher, your deity, or you Higher Self, along with your intention. You start your meditation at the first bead to the right of the guru bead and you cycle through each bead until you return to your guru bead and stop, not crossing the guru bead. There is an option to stop there or you can take hold of your guru bead and say a prayer or set an intention and then stop your meditation.
There is also a traditional way to hold your mala. The beads are held in the right hand as the left hand is seen as impure in some traditions. The beads are held and worked through the thumb and middle finger with the index finger extended (it never touches the beads). This is because the index finger is related to the ego, something that ideal is kept out of meditation. The thumb lightly pulls the bead over the middle finger.
A couple other things... Empowerment of a mala is to set your intention for a specific mala and then charge it by repeating the mantra everyday for 40 days and on the 41st day it is considered charged with your specific intention. It is said that you do not change the mantra now, this mala is specific for that mantra. If you use another mantra, you reset it to neutral... use different malas for different mantras. Also other rules, often not followed by modern westerners. The malas are not jewelry and only to be used for meditation. Yet, I found someone say that wearing it as a necklace is a great way to remember your mantra when you are not meditating. Don't let other people touch your mala. Never place your mala on the floor as it is considered dirty. A mala should be stored in a sacred place if not on your person (ex. Around the neck of a buddha statue). Cleaning your beads – singing bowl can use vibration to do cleansing is great, you can smudge with incense or sage. Don’t wear them when you are showering, bathing, swimming, doing heavy physical activity, or when you sleep. Traditionally someone is to give you your malas, not you purchase your own.
